TECH & OPERATIONS MANAGER – RAGTAG CINEMA

Position Overview: The mission of the Ragtag Film Society is to captivate and engage communities in immersive arts experiences that explore assumptions and elicit shared joy, wonder, and introspection. Ragtag Cinema, our year-round arthouse cinema, provides our regional community with vibrant, essential programming and, along with our building-mates (Uprise Bakery and Hitt Records), serves as a vital cultural hub in this midwest college town. Ragtag Cinema is hiring a Tech and Operations Manager to cultivate the shared experience of cinematic presentation. In this role, you will help keep the show running smoothly through back-of-house coordination for special events and daily showings alike. The ideal candidate will have the following skills and traits:
  • Proficiency in cinema projection and audio technical systems including a thorough understanding of a variety of exhibition formats and equipment such as DCP, Blu-Ray, and 35mm (and ideally also 16mm);
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical problems relating to lights, sound, and video projection;
  • Experience managing people;
  • Extremely detail and deadline oriented, proactive, and thorough;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • A positive attitude and customer-service orientation;
  • Ability to think nimbly, innovate, solve problems, and keep a calm demeanor in stress situations;
  • Physical requirements include ability to lift up to 50 lbs., comfort utilizing ladders, and ability to stand for extended periods of time. 
Duties Include:
  • Regular Cinema projection shifts;
  • Coordinate tech requirements of all special events including coordinating with other support staff and driving event show flows;
  • Provide backup technical support for special events;
  • Communicate with programmer regarding upcoming films to obtain necessary materials from distributors;
  • Assist General Manager with cinema rentals;
  • Regularly change marquee and lobby posters;
  • Support for daily/weekly tasks like confirming film delivery, playlist building, testing content, monitor booth and theatrical equipment for daily use, initiate DCP downloads and coordinate ingestion;
  • Operate and maintain cinema equipment and all other aspects of the cinema operations;
  • Project at Ragtag during True/False Film Fest.
Commitment & Compensation: This is a full-time, year-round position that is eligible for health insurance and paid time off. Pay will be commensurate with experience, in the range of $31,000 – $36,000 annually. Some evening and weekend hours are expected. We offer a fun, results-oriented work environment and a collaborative culture. The ideal candidate should reside in, or be willing to relocate to, Columbia, Missouri year-round.
