True/False Music is excited to share a sneak preview of the 2024 lineup. Going into the weekend before our full slate announce (January 31, mark your calendars!), these artists are a small sampling of the over 40 artists that we’ll host during the festival. Music is woven deeply into the fabric of True/False: welcoming audiences warmly into cinemas, playing showcases into the night long after the movies have ended, and providing a fitting score at every event and party. Highlighting a showcase act from each of the Fest’s four days, the sonics they offer resemble the best of the Midwest’s current musical ecosystem
DANIEL VILLARREAL
Daniel Villarreal is a bandleader, percussionist and DJ based in Chicago, IL. Having earned recognition in the 2010s serving as the drummer of the celebrated Latin-fusion outfit Dos Santos (True/False 21 alum), he’s recently garnered solo acclaim in jazz & psychedelic music circles via recent releases on the vaunted International Anthem label (2022’s Panama ’77 & 2023’s Lados B with Jeff Parker and Anna Butterss). Always aiming to honor the sounds of his native Panama across projects and pursuits, we’re honored to present both Daniel’s eponymous group as well as his work with the upstart duo Valebol (alongside fellow Chicago polymath VV Lightbody).
SWEEPING PROMISES
Boston-bred and currently housed in Lawrence, Kansas, Sweeping Promises is the proverbial moment. After generating initial buzz in the late 2010s, the duo of Lira Mondal & Caufield Schnug relocated to the heartland during the pandemic to concoct their 2023 opus Good Living Is Coming For You. Backed with the might of indie fixture Sub Pop, the album received near universal praise and end-of-year accolades from music press at large. With Mondal’s impassioned and ominous vocals fronting Schnug’s experiments in recording and sound design, Friday’s Fest audience will be treated to a demonstration of punk at its most progressive.
R.A.P. FERREIRA
FKA Milo, AKA Scallops Hotel, R.A.P. Ferreira is a foundational figure of the 2010s alternative rap & beat portrait. Initially hailing from Wisconsin, R.A.P.’s journey has now landed him in Nashville, TN, where he owns and operates his Ruby Yacht label and its accompanying Soul Folks record store. Equal parts philosopher, jester and heavyweight fighter, local audiences may be familiar with him from his headlining performance at the 2022 Columbia Experimental Music Fest. With the goal of marrying the Black musical songbook to modern forms of poetic expression, it’s a sure bet that R.A.P. Ferreira will rap forever.
BSA GOLD
A truly exciting entrant into our musical family tree, BSA Gold is the moniker of Chicago flautist, producer and organizer Barédu Ahmed. Siphoning ingredients from the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane’s ashram to contemporary avant-garde music tinkerers like Ras G & her frequent collaborator Shabazz Palaces, Ahmed’s work signifies a space where the cerebral and physical collide via luscious flute notes and heavy bass hits.
