Each year, True/False brings a multitude of talented visual artists from near and far to reinvent venues and transform downtown during the four-day Fest. This year’s theme, FORESIGHT, speaks to our age-old desire for precognition, to see what’s just around the corner. We’ve asked visual artists to show the future that resides within us all, and to explore humanity’s extraordinary ability to create meaning from fragments. The 2020 Art Program, presented by Say Insurance, includes both esoteric and straightforward interpretations of the theme and a healthy dose of familiar standbys.
Art installations permeate every corner of the festival, including theaters, concert venues, and alleyways. This year’s Sculpture Yard, located on Ninth Street between Locust and Elm will include an immersive encore from everyone’s favorite inflatable-design collective, Pneuhaus, who is back in 2020 with The Compound Camera. Kirsten Angerbauer’s new works, the temple (a physical investigation of the fruitless pursuit of meaning), demonstrates how our idea of foresight can shift in an age of instantaneous information. For those wishing to glimpse the future of the human race won’t want to miss The Trash Oracle, created by Chicago-based artists Kellie Wyatt, Skye Fort, and The American Landfill.
Returning artist Carrie Elliot will be illuminating Alley A again with a new piece called Animal Vision, which includes a collection of gigantic recreations of eyes. Additionally, artists Mark Steck and Daniel Heggarty will be returning to their 2019 location in Missouri Theatre where guests will see images come alive with The Zoetrope Tower.
