"...the film delivers something refreshingly precise in watching the students slip into characters where they can be unburdened of their personal inhibitions to actually speak freely, using the usual contours that these conversations take itself to go somewhere new."

"One of the best docs I’ve seen so far this year...a film that truly surprised me because it does what so few films like this are willing to do: It lets its subjects be messy, unpredictable, and human.... It leads to a film that’s all the more powerful by virtue of feeling so very real."

This annual community screening is presented by True/False Film Fest and the University of Missouri’s Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism to spotlight essential new nonfiction. Acting as a taste of True/False in the offseason, this screening will feature a brand new nonfiction feature, post-film Q&A with the director, and a musical act to open the show. This year we’re thrilled to bring the SXSW-breakout Roleplay to Columbia.

Faced with rampant sexual violence on their campus, a group of college students spend a year creating an immersive play from their real-life experiences. Building characters and scenes based on the sexual politics of their campus, the student actors confront hard truths. In her debut feature, Katie Mathews blurs the lines between reality and performance, oscillating between daily campus life and the confessional vulnerability of the rehearsal room. Posing urgent questions about the toxic legacies imparted on the next generation, Roleplay explores the roles we play as we grow into who we are: how they hurt us, heal us, and shape who we become.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Katie Mathews.

In Fest fashion, audiences will be treated to a pre-film concert. This year we welcome Rae Fitzgerald to the stage. Hearing Rae Fitzgerald’s lonesome, dreamy voice will cause the world around you to melt away, offering an emotional release and a chance to purge your own tensions — sometimes the saddest sound brings the warmest catharsis.

Grab your Super or Silver Circle pass before October 3 and you will receive a complimentary ticket to this screening, and a pre-film reception with director.
