Thirteen-year-old Melrick spends the summer in French Guiana with his grandmother, playing with his friends and connecting with the idea of home in ways that impact his outlook on life and the world around him. Surrounded by rituals, memories, and a household in mourning, Melrick processes the loss of uncle Lucas, who faced a tragic death 11 years prior. Through conversation with his family, Melrick slowly comes to the realization that everyone is still trying to make sense of things and that to find closure means to choose forgiveness every day. A solemn and gentle look at the quiet, even flows of grief, Maxime Jean-Baptiste’s latest film sees him collaborate with his loved ones to craft a collective and nostalgic account of what it means to find intergenerational healing in the midst of continuous cycles of violence.
