Another Country - True/False Film Fest

Another Country

Aboriginal movie star David Gulpilil is our sardonic tour guide to the outback, where his people maintain a strong sense of history against creeping cultural imperialism.
Director: Molly Reynolds
Runtime: 1:15
In-person: dir. Molly Reynolds
Fest Year: 2016
On the edges of Australia’s northern territory lies Ramingining, a small rural town dotted with contradictions. Actor and local Aborigine David Gulpilil, our sardonic tour guide, calmly leads us through a landscape in flux: the dusty-red sun-baked streets, vibrant green roadside flora, Aboriginal ceremonies, alien government infrastructure and a growing trash pile just outside of town. Gulpilil becomes our mediator, relating the experiences of those living in this place to those merely watching it, and pointedly demonstrating the inadequacies of one culture trying to explain another. Turning these cross-cultural challenges into a virtue, filmmaker Molly Reynolds elegantly moves amongst her subjects, a self-aware presence carefully exposing the enormity of the divide. Plays with “Everything and More” (dir. Rachel Rose, 12 min.)(DK)
