DocuMemories continues this Monday, December 17th at Ragtag Cinema with another incredible and underappreciated film, the sort we feel honored to have programmed over the past nine years. On the Other Side of Life (T/F 2010) is a window into the lives of Lucky and Bongani, adolescent brothers living by their wits on the “edge of the edge of the world” in Cape Town, South Africa. When the pair is suddenly charged with a murder, we follow them on a harrowing cross-cultural journey through both a modern penal system and a native Xhosan ritual. All the while the filmmakers’ unbelievable and possibly even alarming level of access allows them to shape the brothers’ story into a compelling narrative.
Consummate cinematography and camera work imbue On the Other Side of Life with an piercing sense of place. Even in stills images from the film contain a transporting power, as you can see below.
This film is the first feature collaboration of the promising German filmmaking team of Andy Wolff and Stefanie Brockhaus. Monday’s screening will include a post-film Skype Q and A where you’ll get the chance to ask them a few of the burning questions this doc is sure to provoke.
