Roaming through the streets of Texas, directors Silvia Del Carmen Castaños’ and EstefanĂa “Beba” Contreras’ (T/F 2022 Rough Cut Retreat alumni) friendship blossoms into a kaleidoscope of conversation, laughs, and activist shenanigans as they spend one final summer together before they go their separate ways. The coming-of-age story of these immigrant artists is set against a backdrop of a dreamy border town torn, much like the pair, between Mexico and the United States. The filmmakers boldly speak about their pasts and create a healing atmosphere to share their art, activism, and joy with each other and audiences. Pairing beautifully shot landscape scenes with a blossoming friendship, Hummingbirds catches flight amongst the smiles, challenges, and wonder of everyday life.
